Washington: A Legacy of Leadership (The Generals) (Hardcover)
by:  Paul S. Vickery

I selected this book because presidential history is infinitely fascinating. Although I was hoping to learn more about Washington, the person, I came away learning more about Washington, the leader--which, of course, was the real purpose of Vickery's book. It reads more like an essay, with little detailed descriptions of the general population, Washington's relationships, family, or early American life. It is truly a book about America's military miracle in the face of the British during the Revolutionary War and Washington's subsequent rise to becoming the Father of this great nation.

George Washington understood leadership and set the precedent for every President since. His example made clear that

1 He recognized that he was a man under authority.
2 Public officials are servants, not rulers.
3 They are selected only for a brief period.

The book does a great job of describing his early years as a military leader. Faith, ambition, work ethic, and character are evident in every decision he makes. Clearly, and as he so often acknowledged, the hand of God was on him, guiding and protecting him in the face of insurmountable danger. His summation in this regard was this: "Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, Religion and morality are indispensable supports."

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Presidential history, anyone interested in political office, and anyone who leads an organization. The lessons to be learned are invaluable.
